We need Round-Table Discussions
to keep trained minds from being academic.

Peter Maurin

In addition to Houses of Hospitality and Farm Communes, Peter Maurin also called for Round-Table Discussions for clarification of thought. We call our Round-Table Discussion ‘Third Place’.

Third Place isn’t just for the intelligentsia, it’s for everyone. Peter Maurin stressed that the workers must become thinkers and the thinkers must become workers. We hope that everything we discuss might lead to action and change, within ourselves and in our community.

What is a Third Place? A Third Place is generally a location where friends would meet up outside of the home (First Place) and work (Second Place). Today, for many, social media has usurped the role of the Third Place. We stand firm at the Catholic Worker that there is no replacement for face to face interaction. We hope to be a Third Place in many ways. A place for people to gather, to encounter new ideas and thinking, and to discover a new radical way of living that’s not really so new.

If you’re looking for a group of people who are interested in serving the poor, living out voluntary poverty, and working towards a better society, this might be the place for you.

We meet every other Thursday night at 8:00pm, in person. The article we discuss is sent out about a week before, reading is not required.
